PROJECT OVERVIEW
The project aimed to transform the Dutch Bros. Coffee website into a user-centric platform, focusing on simplicity, accessibility, and engagement. By revamping the website's structure and incorporating interactive elements, the goal was to create a more appealing and user-friendly experience, ultimately fostering stronger connections with customers and driving business growth.
PROBLEM STATEMENT
Excessive options and disorganized information can hinder a business's success significantly. When a multitude of choices overwhelms users, finding a specific item becomes a daunting task, especially if the navigation lacks clear labels and intuitive elements. Dutch Bros, as an expansive organization offering a wide array of delightful drink options, presently suffers from a lack of precise organization and clear navigation.
A website that isn't user-friendly contributes to increased cognitive strain, prolonged task completion times, heightened user frustration, and ultimately, a decline in website engagement.
USER RESEARCH
During a week-long workshop, my research and design team collaborated with Dutch Bros customers. The research focused on:
- Comprehending the expansive nature of the Dutch Bros website
- Cataloging the diverse range of options, products, and services offered on the site
- Identifying the primary reasons customers visit the website and determining the most crucial pages for them
- Pinpointing the challenges customers encounter while navigating and utilizing the website.
Qualitative Interviews
User research played a pivotal role in our approach. Understanding the intricate ways users interacted with the wealth of information and diverse options was crucial. I meticulously collected insights from end users to achieve this depth of understanding. The aim was to grasp the specific challenges they encountered while navigating the website and to discern their vision for enhancing the platform. This process aimed to uncover pain points and optimize the user experience based on their feedback and perspectives.
“There are so many flavors I want to try but I am skeptical getting new drinks before I see them. Having photos of the drinks would be really beneficial and make me feel better about what I am ordering.”
“I visit coffee shop websites mostly to look at drink options or to find locations. I find it difficult though to know where to go to find this information, and it becomes really frustrating because I often misinterpret buttons and find myself on the wrong page."
“I get coffee everyday to keep me going during school and I like to try different drinks and flavors. It’s really hard though to narrow down what I want since places like Dutch Bros have so many different options."
INSIGHTS
Following user interviews, contextual inquiry, and thorough data analysis, I successfully organized the gathered insights into three distinct categories.
PERSONA
The research findings highlighted distinct challenges faced by various user groups. To address these, I segmented them into two user profiles based on their goals and tasks.
Conceptualization
I initiated the development of information architecture and low-fidelity concepts for the primary use case. Subsequently, we conducted usability tests using the low-fidelity mockup. Upon gaining confidence in the design, we proceeded with digitalizing the designs.
SOLUTION
The Dutch Bros website simplifies the hunt for your perfect drink by offering a straightforward filter that caters to your unique taste preferences.
Whether you're seeking a specific beverage or eager to explore new flavors, you can efficiently navigate through the top-featured drinks.
Additionally, crucial pages like the Full Menu, Location, About, and Shop Dutch are strategically placed for swift access, ensuring you quickly find precisely what you're seeking.
Find specific-flavored drinks
Discover your desired flavored drinks effortlessly through the "Filter by Flavor" feature, enabling customers to pinpoint the exact flavors they crave.
Whether you're in the mood for something specific, seeking similar drinks, or changing your preference, this tool streamlines your search.
Additionally, you can easily remove flavors you no longer desire with a simple deletion option, ensuring a seamless browsing experience.
Find all things Dutch in the navigation
Stay informed about the full spectrum of offerings from Dutch Bros effortlessly through the navigation, eliminating the need to scour the entire website.
With labelled icons for Menu, Location, Store, and Careers, users can seamlessly access these sections, ensuring easy exploration of all available options without any hassle.
USABILITY TE STING
Throughout the project, I conducted comprehensive product testing at multiple stages:
- Lo-fi prototypes underwent weekly participant testing to gather feedback on functionality, content, and interactivity, ensuring continual refinement.

- Additionally, unmoderated user testing involved selected participants navigating the website, engaging them in hypothetical tasks to assess usability and effectiveness.
Seeing Results
Following the Beta testing phase, we conducted a comparative analysis between the redesigned version and the original website. Presenting our findings in May, we're thrilled to announce significant enhancements in User Confidence, Completion Rate, and User Satisfaction, indicating a notably improved user experience.
